Introduction to Odissi Classical Indian Dance

Odissi, one the most ancient dance forms of India, is an exquisitely devotional embodiment of divine archetypes and Vedic teachings, expressing the harmonious balance of masculine & feminine energy as Lasya (graceful flowing arm movements & mudra hand gestures) with Tandava (vigorous rhythmic footwork).

In this training, we will experience the fundamental forms held within Odissi dance. Approaching the forms through an understanding of body alignment and balance of weight, we will be taking the time to feel their effects on our bodies, and feeling how they translate into an emotional aesthetic.

Carrying the guiding principles of Odissi form and technique, we will explore central themes such as walking patterns, classical arm positions, as well as Mudra hand gestures. We will use the instruments of our bodies to explore the full spectrum of human emotion to express the devotion and rich poetic storytelling of classical Indian temple dance.

There is a popular saying in Hindi that, "Inside the milk is the golden butter," meaning that beauty lays dormant without form to express itself. Through our dancing, we reconnect to our essence, allowing our bodies to be moved by Grace, to where the heart speaks and overflows from its original language, where words end and true dance begins…
